How Zoos Have Reconstructed Their Habitat
Okapi:
Zoos have reconstructed the okapi habitat at the zoo by putting in lots of trees where they can get food from and hide near when they are startled, food inside a container where the okapi can get food from when they need it and can use their long tongue to get to it, and areas where okapis can go when they are scared. Some zoos have some rocks or objects that are used to help the okapis get used to climbing or walking up large objects. Giraffe: Zoos have reconstructed the giraffe habitat at the zoo by making it African grassland themed. Zoos have put in shaded areas for giraffes, some tall trees for giraffes to access, and put in other giraffes to make the giraffes more comfortable in their environment. Zoos have also given many toys for giraffes to play with and use their long tongues on to make them keep the habit of using their long tongue. Zoos also make giraffes able to get up close to people in their exhibit because they are gentle and friendly to humans. |
Why They Keep Them There
Zoos keep okapis and giraffes at zoos because they are amazing animals, have many unique skills and giraffes have low populations that the zoos could help increase. Giraffes at zoos are able to get up close to people and are able to get hand fed by people too. This makes them more social towards them and makes them more friendly. Also, many of the giraffes populations are low and the zoo help by putting more giraffes into the population and by making their lives last longer. Their unique features like their tall body and long tongs are very cool and attract many people. Okapis are kept at zoos because they have many interesting features like their long tongue and creative pattern. Also their population is low because they are only located in one place in the wild and their habitat is getting destroyed. At zoos, they will be able to increase their population and have a longer lifespan. http://wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/where_we_work/congo_basin_forests/the_area/wildlife/mammals/okapi/ http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/species/giraffe_intro/ http://www.giraffeworlds.com/giraffes-in-captivity/ http://a-z-animals.com/animals/okapi/
